The Orange and Blue Observer is excited to welcome Michael Tanner, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, and an expert in health care policy, to the University of Illinois this Thursday for a panel on health care reform. Mr. Tanner will be a panelist along with Professor David Hyman, the Richard W. and Marie L. Corman Professor of Law and Medicine at the University of Illinois. Together these two will tell us about all of the problems with the current health care reform proposals before Congress, and a better approach to fixing our system, one that involves the free market. The panel will begin at 6:30 in the Law Building Auditorium. The two will give a short speech and then the floor will be open to questions and comments from the audience. We welcome and encourage friendly debate. We hope to see you there!

Although the myriad of progressive policies that have been proposed by the Obama administration might seem like they are new and exciting, the fact is they are nothing but old ideas repackaged and resold to the general public.
The idea of universal health care and national health insurance is nothing new. Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to champion these ideas and they were rejected by the American public. Ever since, progressives have been trying to find new ways to market the idea to try and get the American public to buy into the idea. When looking at the history of something like universal health care, one can see that, when push comes to shove, Americans reject the idea of large scale wealth redistribution programs-and make no mistake about it, these are wealth redistribution programs-because the idea of tearing the top down in order to build the bottom up is fundamentally un-American. But what about the overall effect of wealth redistribution? In order to get a good idea of where the United States will be with universal healthcare, the Waxman Markey Bill, and a whole host of other Obama policies, one needs to look no further than a game of Mario Kart.

Yesterday on FOX News, Greta Van Susteren interviewed Texas Democrat Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (video here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzYC944snuk) on her pathetic display of apathy toward her constituents. This manifested itself when Jackson-Lee literally made a phone call while someone at a town hall meeting was asking her a question. Several times during the interview Lee said with regards to her constituents that she "remains steadfast ready to hear them and trying to convince them" that Obamacare is the best option. My question is this: since when has it ever been a politician's job to try to convince the public of anything? They are supposed to be representative of the people, not the other way around. It's clear from the video that Ms. Lee was not there to hear anybody. Was anybody there convinced?
(Also, has "Representative" Lee never heard the term 'dissed' before?)

If you're checking out the OBO because you met one of us at Republican Day at the Illinois State fair on Thursday, welcome! The OBO strives to be the alternative voice on campus for conservative and libertarian students that is not present in other campus media such as the Daily Illini ("Daily Illiterate" as one clever alum termed it). Right now the OBO is seeking donors to help us fund conservative activities for the following semester as well as to offset printing costs for the paper. Planned activities include gun raffles, affirmative action bake sales, conservative movie nights, and bringing in conservative leaders to talk about current issues. Planned speakers include John Ziegler, Dinesh D'Souza, and Newt Gingrich. Donations can be made via our PayPal link on the main page or by contacting Jordan Harp at
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
. Also, please feel free to subscribe to the paper using the link on the left of the main page. We ask that if you do subscribe to please make at least a $6 donation which is solely to cover the cost of shipping the paper. Subscriptions should include at least 6 issues. Thanks for visiting the OBO, we hope to see you in the next semester.

By now you've probably seen the Democrat attack ad calling grassroots Obamacare protesters a "mob" (if not, click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtTBkxvBq88). In the ad they say that Republicans "lost on the recovery act". But wasn't it just a few short months ago that Obama and the left wing press were touting the "recovery" act as a bipartisan measure? You can't have it both ways. Just sayin'.
